Sophia Economides
1923-2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sophia Economides in her 94th year. Wife of the late John N. Economides C.M., LL.D., and cherished mother of Nicholas and Peter (Dina), dear grandmother of Sophie and Denise, dear sister-in-law of George Economides (Helen).

Sophia was a dedicated volunteer with a lifetime commitment to many organizations. She started volunteering as a young child participating in fund raising activities of the Hellenic Ladies Benevolent Society. The Society recognized Sophia for her continued dedicated volunteerism for over 53 years.

She joined the Montreal Council of Women in 1962 and was a life Member. In 1993, Sophia was the recipient of Montreal Council’s prestigious award ‘’Woman of the Year’’ honouring exemplary women in Montreal. She was a role model and mentor for those who had the privilege of working with her, being an acquaintance and a dear friend.

Sophia and her husband John, contributed immensely to the success of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. They both received the Kidney Foundation Founders award in recognition of their distinguished leadership and dedication to the cause. She was a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.

Sophia volunteered and was a member of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Chateau Ramezay which she joined in 1969 and held many executive positions. She worked assiduously for the benefit of the Montreal Children’s Library helping to establish libraries for children.

Funeral service will be at the Mount Royal funeral complex on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 1PM followed by a reception.
