Mom finally found her perfect peace on Tuesday August 27th.
Predeceased by her husband of 55 years Muir (Woody), her parents Eleanor and William, her beloved aunt Beryl Sifton, and her two lifelong friends Liz Imrie and Nora Hildebrandt, she is survived and beloved by her brother Bill Tyler, her children Stephen (Eungyu), Cathy, and David (Lianne), her grandchildren, Ian, Daniel and Alex Wood and David LeNir, her great friend Eva Vogt and many nieces and nephews. A lifelong member of the town of Montreal West, she lived in the family home tending the rose garden planted by her grandfather.

Berta was a polymath and an athlete. She earned her BSc. in biochemistry at McGill, while receiving an achievement award for leadership of the women’s field hockey team. Her distinguished career as Head of Science at the Sacred Heart School and later at Trafalgar School for Girls, teaching physics, chemistry and mathematics earned her the Prime Minister’s Award for the teaching of Science. A devoted feminist and scientist she inspired a generation of young women to pursue careers in science, engineering and medicine.

Throughout her life Mom was an avid adventurer and lover of nature. With her friends Nora and Liz she embarked on a lifelong series of adventures, travelling Europe, Mexico, and many places hitchhiking and backpacking. Her canoe trips every year went into progressively wilder terrain, eventually leading to drop-offs by bush plane in the wilderness. Winters were for cross country skiing with Nancy and Larry Geller and the gang.

In retirement, Mom volunteered at Elizabeth House teaching math, a service she loved, took up curling, joining the SLICS, returned to playing bridge, volunteered at the Children’s Library and went swimming everyday on her bicycle.

Heartfelt thanks to the incredible and caring staff at Sunrise Beaconsfield, who looked after Mom with such dignity and good humour.

Visitation will take place on Saturday September 21 at 10:30, followed by a service to celebrate Mom’s life at 11:30 at the:
