Robert Smit

March 1, 1957 -  April 29, 2019

Robert (Bob) Smit passed away on April 29, 2019 in Montreal, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of 38 years to Julie and loving father to Daniel (Kavya) and Leigh (Marc), youngest brother to Marianne (John) and Jack (Evelyne) will be remembered for his exemplary selflessness, dedication to family/friends and his love of the outdoors.

A celebration of life will be held in his honor at Beaconsfield United Church on Saturday, May 4 at 4:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Cedars Cancer Centre at Royal Victoria Hospital or Dans La Rue would be appreciated.

Rob will be greatly missed by those who knew him and forever in our hearts. Until we meet again.

Dear Smit Family:

Bob and I worked together at CN HQ for many years. He was a respected and knowledgeable colleague whose insightful comments always gave one pause to reconsider a "firmly" held position. May his memory provide comfort and bring a smile to your face.

It was with great sadness that I found out about Bob's passing today. Bob was the most wonderful person I have ever had the opportunity to meet. May you rest in peace Bob. Heaven just gained an angel yesterday. My condolences to Bob's family.

We are so saddened by Rob's passing and had great hopes he was on the road to recovery following his stem cell transplant. Rob was so brave in his fight; it was hard to comprehend his courage...and he remained positive right to the end. I will always remember him at the train station in Dorval waiving and smiling as we left the station following our final visit with Julie and he back in October. That is how I will choose to remember him. I hope he is enjoying being reunited with our Dad in Heaven with whom he was so close. RIP Rob. We miss you.

To the Smit Family:

Bob was a tremendous man and colleague and went out of his way to accommodate his business partners. He always had a smile on his face and the discussions always led back to his family and how proud he was of you all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.

Ed Foley
