In Celebration of

Michael Perceval-Maxwell

September 8, 1933 -  May 21, 2022

Michael a publié plusieurs articles et deux livres incontournables portant sur l’histoire de l’Irlande: The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James 1 (1973; réédité 2021) et The Outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641 (1994).

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael Perceval-Maxwell at Château Westmount long-term care home on May 21, 2022, at the age of 88. Born on September 8,1933 in Bishop's Stortford, England, he was the son of John Robert Perceval-Maxwell and Phoebe Cherry. His first beloved wife, Maria De Holtzer and his brothers Robin, Andrew (Polly Hugues), Gavin, and Peter predeceased him. He is survived by Shaun (Elsbeth Heaman) and Dylan (Julie Filiatrault) and their children Liam, Neela, and Sam, as well as by his sister Selina (Robin Gun- Cunninghame). Michael is also grieved by his spouse of the last 26 years, Réjeanne Gougeon, and her daughters Katia Reyburn (Philippe Lamarre) and Erika Reyburn (Rémy Regouffre) and their children Edouard, Chloé, Elsa, Olivia, as well as many nephews, nieces, friends and colleagues.

After studies at Eton and summers working in the fields of the family estate in Northern Ireland, Michael came to Canada in 1953, to obtain a diploma in agricultural studies at Macdonald College. His great interest in history led to a BA from Sir George Williams and a MA and Ph.D. from McGill University where he taught History from 1963 until his retirement. In 2001, he was nominated Emeritus Professor. He served as chair of the department from 1972 to 1975 and for two terms as Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Michael published numerous articles and two indispensable books on Irish history: The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James I (1973; reissued 2021) and The Outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641 (1994). He approached the troubled history of his native Ulster with the utmost scrupulousness. His analyses of popular movements of people remain relevant today.

Michael had a great passion for gardening and nature conservancy, passion that he expressed in the Laurentians, despite Parkinson’s disease which affected him for 15 years. A true gentleman, Michael lived with dignity until the end. Erudite and humble, we will remember him as a conscientious friend, a great listener, a generous, kind, witty and elegant person.

Commemorative services will take place on June 1st, 2022 at 6:00 PM at Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297, chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, H2V 2P9. The family will receive condolences beginning at 4:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory to the Nature Conservancy of Canada can be made.
