Marie was an outstanding person, possessed of energy, heart and curiosity. We shared a love of books, teaching, language, animals, food, psychology and spiritual matters. She was a tiger, and it was reflected in her driving- I used to think she only pressed the break or downshifted when she could see the driver’s eyelashes. She had an extraordinary intellect and whatever she undertook she did with ferocity. She was loyal, loving and generous. Marie was supremely organized but even Marie could not control cancer. I will miss her and remember her. I was better off for having known her. Joey, Richard and I send our deepest condolences to the family, your loving friend, Edna
Dear Marie, we met when we were five and knew each other longer than anyone apart from our families. I introduced you to salami and you introduced me to gjetost. You brought music into my life and shared its heart of books and reading. You were one of the best critics of my work. We shared our time on the planet. I will miss you. Carole Angier, née Brainin
Mrs. Blydt Hansen was my tenth grade English teacher at Herzliah High School in Montreal in 1980. My husband always talks about his high school art teacher as someone who changed his life and your wife/mother was that teacher for me. 40 and more years later I still tell people that she was the person who helped me find my life’s work. In her class we read the novel Fountainhead by author Ayn Rand about what I now realize was a severely flawed character, architect Howard Roark. It was then at the age of 15 that I decided that I would be an architect. I have been practicing my profession since 1987. Your wife/ mother had a long lasting impact on me and I remember her fondly. I was saddened to hear of her passing this morning. My sincere condolences, Rhona Goldenberg
I had the privilege of teaching beside Marie at Herzliah High School for about thirty years. Her love of teaching was only matched by her love of family as she frequently spoke adoringly and proudly of her boys , including Rolf. She created, organized and chronicled our very successful INTEGRATION PROJECT which showed the relevance and connection of secular studies to Judaic material. In fact she seemed to know as much about Jewish laws and customs as anybody on our faculty and always respected everyone. She organized and chaperoned numerous unforgettable trips to the Stratford Festival, always a highlight for her appreciative students. She was a dedicated, tireless educator, an adoring mother and grandmother, a loving wife and a dear and cherished colleague who inspired thousands of students to read and enjoy literature. She left her mark on so many. What a wonderful legacy.
Our sincere message of sympathy to our long-standing neighbours of over fifty years.
We are so very saddened by your loss.
Ida and Claude Rouben.
