Jocelyne "Joss" Evans née Jolin, of Kirkland Quebec, died on Thursday, September 7th 2017 after a long 33 month rollercoaster journey with Pancreatic Cancer. At the end, she was being cared for by some very amazing people on the Palliative Floor at the MUHC Glen Site for over a month. Joss was 60 years old, and was born on December 28th, 1956, in Valleyfield Quebec during the Christmas trip home to be with Family while living on the Air Force base in Ottawa. Her Dad was in the Air Force thus Joss lived on multiple bases prior to settling in Chateauguay Quebec and graduating from Howard S. Billings High School.
Jocelyne then completed the John Abbott College – 3 year Nursing Program and commenced her Nursing Career as an RN, at the Montreal General Hospital from 1976 to 1978.
In February 1977, Jocelyne met her Husband Rusty and in the summer of 1978 they got engaged. Jocelyne then went with him on his company transfer to Edmonton Alberta for close to 10 years. Where she worked as an RN who was a Certified Trainer in establishing I.V. Lines in infants on the Pediatric Floor as well as in the Emergency Dept. at the Misericordia Hospital in West Edmonton.
Joss married Russ Evans in Montreal during January of 1980, and together they had 2 male children in Alberta, Ryan Evans who is married to Mary-Lynn Harney, and Brad Evans who is married to Jessica Zagari. All are living in the Montreal West Island area.
Returning to Montreal in 1988 and to all of her family and friends, allowed Joss to reconnect with everyone after being away for so long. Her priority in life became Family and she adjusted her professional career to allow for being with her children for their school requirements and multiple Family gatherings by working all kinds of crazy 12 hr & split shifts in order to be off and at home while the boys were young. Jocelyne returned to Emergency medicine at the Lakeshore Hospital, then to day shifts at Statcare Medical Clinic, Joss really enjoyed the 4 years with Transport Canada as the Nurse at the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Airport Medical Clinic. The airport clinic closed and Joss returned to Emergency medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
This led to Jocelyne joining the team at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Vaccine Center in 1992 as a Research Nurse / Nurse Co-ordinator for 12 years. This assignment started her 23 year career in research medicine. During this time Jocelyne received the nickname “Vampira” as her I.V. training in Edmonton allowed her to procure the required blood sample from the babies in the Clinical Study with ease, and then she would go on to train her other nurses on how to do it.
During this time, Joss’s attention to detail, professionalism, and strong knowledge of the clinical protocol’s subject detail, created opportunities for her to advance her career to the other side of the desk, and in 2004 she became a Clinical Research Monitor for the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, where she has worked until now. Amongst the many awards she received during that time, her claim to fame was winning the “Scientific Affairs Award of Excellence” in 2012.
Then the cancer started giving Joss pain in the Fall of 2014 when she was misdiagnosed with Type II Diabetes, so she continued to persevere through the pain, as she traveled across the country doing her job until being forced to leave in February 2015 due to getting very sick from the cancer.
On Feb 14th 2015, Valentine’s Day, Jocelyne was diagnosed with Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer and commenced her 33 month rollercoaster journey of different chemo protocols, then in early June 2017, she fell and broke her shoulder, fractured her hip, and had brain bleed which started the road to the end.
Jocelyne touched the lives of countless people throughout her life, and she would help anyone she knew needing assistance like when new parent neighbours had issues with the baby in the middle of the night , she would go over and rectify the situation to the best of her abilities, or be with a neighbour while a family member was dying, then she would come home and go off to work.
Joss loved to travel across North America visiting friends and adopted family with the Caribbean (especially to Jamaica) being a holiday go to location, spending quality time and partying with Family, Friends for what ever reason was always her favorite time.
Her favorite time of the year was the Christmas holidays.
She loved her pups "Vegas & Jackson" very very much and they spent many hours with her providing love and affection.
Being on the water in her boat with Rusty was was what she would look forward to do during the summer, sitting in the sun working on her tan, and reading her book.…
After her fall in June, she continued to persevere with even more pain as the broken shoulder could not be repaired due to the fragile state Jocelyne was in.
She found the strength and was able to attend her son Brad and Jessica’s wedding on July 1st and danced with her son for the Mother & Son dance, (there was not a dry eye in the venue) while ensuring that she did not miss anything going on and she enjoyed every single minute of the 2 day event as a proud, dignified, stunning, Mother..
Now that her terrible journey has finally come to an end, it is now allowing Jocelyne to Go with the Angels and Rest in Peace with No More Pain…
In lieu of flowers being sent, the family asks that Memorial donations be made in the name of Jocelyne "Joss" Evans née Jolin’s to Pancreatic Cancer of Canada..
Jocelyne will be sadly missed, but rest assured, she will be with us in spirit going forward…...
Thank You to Everyone who came to be with her, and who assisted in looking after her on the Palliative Floor (Patty, Jean-Guy, Christian,Mimi,Laurie, Shay, and all of her children). She was never alone during her final days.
A Very Big Thank You is going out to all of the Nurses and Doctors and staff, who work on the 9th floor on the Palliative Floor at the MUHC Glen Site. for their compassion, professionalism, and hard work to ensure that Jocelyne and her entire family was as comfortable as possible during her time with them.
