A true gentleman until the end, Jawaid Khan, 80, passed away at his home on Île Cadieux surrounded by his family on Oct. 1, 2022, after a valiant and courageous battle against Pulmonary Fibrosis without ever losing his smile, positive attitude or lust for life.
Born in Patna, India, on May 23, 1942, Jawaid arrived in Montreal with his family in 1953. He briefly attended McGill University before graduating from Sir George Williams University. He began his career in investments in 1969 with Pitfield MacKay Ross before moving to L. F. Rothschild in New York. He finally joined MacDougall, MacDougall & MacTier in 1973, where he spent over forty very happy years as a well-respected portfolio manager and partner who had a deep affection for all those he worked with and advised.
Jawaid was also a role model and leader in the Montreal community, always looking to give back or help anyone in need. He was a past president of the Hillside Tennis Club, a member of the Indoor Tennis Club, the Mount Royal Club, and Vice Chair of the Grace Dart Foundation. He was also a Knight of St. John Ambulance, who honoured him with the Queen's Jubilee Medal.
A man for whom family meant everything, Jawaid prided himself on bringing people together. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Susan (MacLaren) Khan, his four daughters, Nissa, Jenni (Paul McIntyre), Tina (Lukas Lhotsky) and Wendy (Philip Kaufman) and will be dearly missed as Grampa JK by his five grandchildren, Jaden, Oliver, and Simon Kaufman and Sabine and Sacha Lhotsky. He is also survived by his dear sisters, Shameem Khan and Ambereen Barker and sisters-in-law Claire Molson, Jane Faulkner, Dianne Khan, Anita Khan and Marty Khan, and was beloved Uncle JK to a legion of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers Zafar, Nadeem and Faheem Khan.
The family is deeply indebted to Dr. James Gruber of the MGH for helping him navigate this awful disease, to Judy Tellier and Anna Maria Westcott and the whole volunteer team at Nova Hudson, who performed miracles for us, and the exceptional, compassionate and tireless team from CLSC Palliative Care Vaudreuil-Dorion, specifically Dr. Annick Terret-Hans and Valérie Emond, Suzanne Trottier, and all the dedicated caregivers for granting Jawaid's final wish of passing away peacefully and comfortably at home, surrounded by family, with hummingbirds darting by his window, a view of the lake just beyond, and The Blend playing on the radio. It was his favourite place.
Jawaid was the perfect host, welcoming everyone into his home with a handshake, a hug and a smile. His unwavering positive outlook carried him through to the end. He always said, "I am blessed," and we are blessed to have known and loved him.
Service in celebration of Jawaid Khan's life will take place at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex at 1297 Forêt Rd, Outremont, Quebec H2V 2P9 on Oct. 21, 2022, at 11 am.
