It is with great sadness that we announce, after a courageous battle with cancer, the sudden passing of Helen Bird (née Bulger), Tuesday April 27th in Montreal, at the age of 78.
Helen was born in Charlottetown, PEI November 17, 1942 to Isabelle and Michael Bulger, the 7th of 14 children. She was an studious and hardworking student and earned a scholarship to St Dunstan’s University where she received her teaching degree. After a brief time teaching in Nova Scotia her and her friend accepted teaching positions in Montreal and packed their bags for a new adventure in the big city. It was in Montreal that she met the love of her life, her husband, the late George Bird, and she made her home.
She was a resilient, intelligent and determined woman who never backed down from a challenge. After many years of homemaking and raising children she returned to her studies; learning computer languages, upholstery, secretarial duties, and even how to rivet and drive a backhoe in a Women in non-traditional roles Government program. She worked in accounts for many years before ultimately returning to her roots where she finished out her career as a daycare educator at Dorset Elementary school where she loved helping the kids with her homework program. In her retirement she enjoyed volunteering at Lakeshore Hospital, Volunteering at her church, St John Fisher, activities at the Pointe Claire Senior’s centre, crafting, playing bridge, spending time with her grandchildren, and chatting with new friends at her apartment complex, L’Esterel
She leaves to mourn her 4 adoring children: Maureen (David Fleury), David, Bryan, & Sarah (Derek Patino). Her beloved grandchildren Gabrielle, Joseph, Patrick, Emmy, Georgia, Cecelia, Teagan, & Xavier. Her brothers, sisters , sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. As well as many close friends.
A funeral mass for immediate family will be held at St John Fisher Catholic Church in Pointe Claire Wednesday May 12th
She was fierce and hopeful to the end. We would like to thank the staff at MUHC/Cedars Cancer Centre for their expertise and empathy. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cedars Cancer Foundation
