In Celebration of

Emma Bucich (Merzlich)

August 30, 1929 -  October 27, 2021

Merzlich, Bucich, Emma Egidia
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our precious Emma, our beloved Mamma and Wife to Giovanni (Nini) on October 27, 2021, in her 92nd year, while surrounded by her loving family. Emma fought a courageous battle with dementia. “Unless you knew our Mom before the illness, you really can’t understand how deeply sad and heartbreaking this was and still is. Our Mom was the strongest woman we’ve ever known.”

Emma was born in Plomin (Fianona), Istria, Croatia on August 30, 1929 to her predeceased, loving parents, Maria and Antonio Bucich, whom she adored immensely, a Daughter like no other. She was a loving Sister to her predeceased brother, Pepi, with whom she had a deep and loving bond, even if they were 6,487 kilometres apart.

Emma married her longtime friend and love, Giovanni, (Nini) Merzlich, on September 12, 1954, a devoted Wife of 67 years. She was the loving and proud Mamma to Ida (Matthew), Gianna (Mark) and Robert (Julia and children Claudia, Nicolas and Marc). Emma was a very doting, loving and proud Nonna to Michael (Laura), Robert (Danielle), Candice (Kole), Chloe (Zach) and soon to be Bisnonna. She cherished her grandchildren, and they cherished their Nonna.

Emma lived a full and incredible life as a devoted Wife, Mamma, Nonna and Friend to all whose lives she touched. She was loved by her extended family, friends and neighbours, residing in Canada, Croatia, Italy, Slovenia and the United States, and with whom she treasured those long telephone conversations. She leaves many fond memories for all who knew and loved her.

Emma came to Canada in the fall of 1960, in search for that wonderful new life that she heard so much of. Mom’s hands were rarely still. She perfected the meaning of what a ”homemaker” is and does. She was a dedicated, and extremely skilled worker in the women’s clothing manufacturing sector for all her life. She loved to cook and bake (if you have ever had the pleasure of tasting Mom’s food you know…delicious!), she was highly skilled with knitting needles, crochet hooks, and was also an impeccable seamstress. A farm girl at heart, gardening was also her big passion. Academically, Emma received many accolades, awards, and a scholarship (she could not pursue as she had to work on the family farm) and was always at the top of her class, due to her creative ability and intelligence. Math was her forte.

Emma held her family close to her heart and they were her world. Always a humble woman, never forgetting where she came from, treating everyone with respect, selfless and concerned for her family to the end. She instilled in us, her children, strong values that have served us well.

My dearest Wife Emma, our precious Mamma and Nonna, you will be profoundly missed and be forever in our hearts. Dear Emma, Mamma and Nonna thank you for all the lovely and many cherished memories.
“Mio Amore, moje Srce Emma, ti amo, tanti baci e riposa in pace di tuo Nini.”
"Un milione di baci e riposa in pace nostra cara Mamma e Nonna."
"Mamma, we your children, Ida, Gianna and Robert, we will love you forever, and forever, you will be in our hearts. You are now our Angel.”

Our immediate family will be celebrating the life of Emma Merzlich, Bucich on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in a private funeral ceremony.

If you wish to send flowers you can send them to Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, Quebec, H2V-2P9 or make a Memorial donation to the Alzheimer Society of Montreal at the following address: https://www.imakeanonlinedonation.org/socalzh/DIM/

Degnatevi o Signore
di non separare nel cielo
coloro che avete uniti
cosi’ strettamente in terra.

Non piangete la mia assenza:
sentimenti vicina
e parlatemi ancora.
Io vi amero’ dal cielo
come vi ho amato in terra.
