In Celebration of

Elizabeth (Betty) Newman

February 4, 1929 -  January 12, 2020

On Sunday, January 12, 2020, Betty died peacefully at Westmount One seniors' residence at the age of 90. Predeceased by her mother Florence Whitlock, who died when Betty was 2, by her father Percy Newman, her aunt Grace Newman, her beloved stepmother Jeanne Alper, and her dear cousin Geoffrey Newman.
Betty was born on February 4, 1929, in Saranac Lake, New York, and spent her childhood at the family farm in Ville LaSalle, Quebec with her Aunt Grace, where she developed her lifelong love of animals. She spent her teenage and young adult years with Jeanne and Percy. As an adult, Betty moved to Toronto where she worked in a law firm as a stenographer and assistant to the firm's senior lawyers.
Betty loved theatre, film, travel, and fine dining. She travelled extensively in Europe, and was particularly enthusiastic about England, Italy and Spain. In the early 1960s she lived for a year in London, England. She enjoyed seeing friends and family and going to restaurants, the theatre and to movies. She was very gracious and considerate of others and had a positive outlook on life.
Betty leaves behind her sister Judith and brother Keith, her niece and nephews Bob (Marilyn Masson), Michelle (Donal O'Reardon), Julien, and Simon. She also leaves behind her great-niece and great-nephews Daniel, Rylen, Rachel and Eli, as well as many cousins. She will be missed by Gail Stewart, who has been a good friend to Betty for many years. Thank you to Shereen Lee for all her kindness, and to the staff of Westmount One for their good care.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, 514-279-6540 (www.mountroyalcem.com)
