Dionyssios Papagiannakis

November 26, 1925 - December 23, 2021

Dionyssios Papagiannakis passed away on 23 December 2021 at the age of 96. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his amazing resilience, courage, and love for life. He passed away peacefully knowing he was dearly loved by his family and everyone who knew him.

Dionyssios was born in a small, remote village of Epanochori in Chania, Crete. His first love was the Madares of the Lefka Ori where he spent the first 43 years of his life helping support his patriarchal family as a farmer. His love for the mountains was surpassed by the love he had for his wife of 53 years, Eugenia Chountalos. Together, they left his beloved Crete to set down new roots in Montreal where he worked hard to raise his family. His pride and joy were his children Sofia (Shan) and Antonio. The highlight of his later years were his cherished grandsons Jordan and Nathan.

A special thank you to his nieces and nephews in Canada and Greece who have continuously showed their love and support throughout the years.

Dionyssios requested that in lieu of flowers, family and friends can donate to the Cedar Cancer Center or Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Due to covid restrictions, the church service will be by invitation only.
The burial is open to all willing to brave the weather on Wednesday, 29th December at noon. Masks are mandatory and social distancing must be respected.

Papou was a great man.
In the year 2013, while our family was visiting Greece with him, he knew the area better than the back of his hand, telling us about the tree he his behind during WWII. I remember listening to the adults talk and being offered a shot of his homemade moonshine, i was 9 years old at the time and i felt honoured.

Our deepest condolences. What a wonderful man he was. We are blessed to have been able to know and love him.
Dionyssios was beyond generous, so incredibly strong in every way.
He had flare and loved life even when life was not easy. His laugh would always spread joy.
He left a mark of kindness on all fs us.

Dionyssios was chosen family and a friend for over 50 years. We shared a lifetime of ups and downs. Shared many laughs and celebrations: name days, Christmas meals, new year's eve get togethers, weddings, Easters, and regular week-end visits. He and Evgenia were known to grab a cab and crash a party or two. He was warm, knowledgeable and funny. I will miss him very much and may God rest his soul.I hope he is having coffee with my Sofia these days. Zoe se sas.
