In Celebration of

David Waters

April 7, 1935 -  August 27, 2021

Peacefully on August 27 at St Raphael hospice.

Dear husband of Katherine Young for 58 years; beloved father of Juliet and Kent; loving grandfather of Ben. Born in Montreal, David attended Loyola High School and College. An editorialist at The Gazette and The Montreal Star, he specialized in Quebec affairs during the FLQ crisis and the birth of the Parti Quebecois. As Executive Producer of current affairs television for CBC (CBMT) he oversaw “talking head” shows like Decision and Critical Path, which featured leading Quebec politicians and visiting international scholars. He founded the Quebec Association of English-Speaking Journalists. As a faculty member of Concordia’s journalism department, he taught editorial writing and the history of Quebec media.

Journalism was David’s profession, but writing was his passion. As a critic, author of two novels, and several plays, one dramatized on CBC TV, he was a deep, independent and imaginative thinker. He was also a builder of three cottages (and many skylights), the most cherished on the beach at Biddeford Pool. Maine, where he and Katherine spent forty summers with family and friends.

A celebratory service will be held on Monday, September 13, 11 am at the chapel of the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, H2V 2P9.

Donations honouring David may be made to the remarkable Maison St Raphael at maisonstraphael.org
