In Celebration of

Claudia Jeanne Sancandi Riddell

September 24, 1943 -  May 18, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we inform you that, after a courageous eight year struggle to overcome the effects of strokes and congestive heart failure, Claudia departed this life the morning of 18 May at the Montreal Heart Institute. She leaves to mourn her husband Norman; her three daughters: Morgane (Jeff), Lina (Simon) and Eleanor (Sandro); her sister Yolande Glatigny; her sister-in-law Carol (Richard) Heatherington; her grandchildren: Justin, Sacha, Luca, Jerome and Liyah; and several nieces and nephews.

Born 24 September 1943 In Brest, France, the first child of Jacques and Claudine Sancandi, Claudia grew up in occupied and later post-war France. Life was hard. Her mother raised Claudia on her own for three years while her father, an immigrant to France, completed his military service with the French army and obtained French citizenship. As the only male child of an Italian widow, Claudia’s father then worked to support not only his little family, but his mother and sisters as well. Food was rationed and living conditions were difficult. Claudia caught rheumatic fever and was forced to spend a significant portion of her adolescence in bed. Unbeknownst to her at the time, the disease damaged her heart and left her with a condition that was to mark the rest of her life.

Upon completing technical school in Paris, Claudia was avid for adventure. She seized the opportunity to travel to Africa where she found employment with the European Development Fund selecting candidates and providing scholarships for promising students to pursue their studies in France. It was in Dakar that she met the young Canadian diplomat who was to become her husband.

When Norman was posted back to Canada in 1975, Claudia immigrated to Ottawa. The first winter was a major challenge with two young children and a third on the way. An opportunity to join the Canadian Embassy in Saudi Arabia proved too tempting to refuse and in September 1976 the young family was on its way abroad.

It was in Saudi Arabia that the effects of Claudia’s childhood rheumatic fever first caught up with her. By late 1976 Claudia was too weak to hold her youngest child. With the help of an American doctor in Jeddah she obtained an appointment at the Montreal Heart Institute and, leaving her young children with friends and family, she traveled to Montreal where she underwent open heart surgery in January 1977.

The surgery was a success and there followed a series of postings/assignments with her husband in London, Ottawa, Brasilia, Regina, Montreal, Edmonton, Abidjan, Hanoi, Accra and Cairo. During this time Claudia pursued a variety of activities. She acted on the stage. She taught French. She served as a diplomatic hostess. She became a jeweler. She rescued a young boy in Brazil and gave him an education and a fresh start in life. She helped Norman’s sister to adopt a little girl from Brazil. Her first priority, however, was always the well-being of her husband and children. Claudia was the heart of her family, always there to provide loving support, wise counsel and an example of how to live a life in balance with the environment.

Her health began to fail in 2013 when she suffered the first of three strokes. There followed an eight year struggle to regain a semblance of normal life during which she demonstrated incredible courage and self-discipline. Her husband Norman served as her principal care giver with loving help from their daughters. By 2019 her heart was failing and, after multiple hospitalizations and major heart surgery, she entered hospital on 9 May 2021 for the last time. She will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank the nurses at CLSC Metro and the doctors, nurses and staff of the Montreal Heart Institute for the compassionate care they provided to Claudia. Their humanity in the face of her suffering is something the family will always remember.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the ceremony to celebrate her life will be limited to members of Claudia’s immediate family. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Montreal Heart Institute in Claudia’s memory.

To dear Norman & to all the Riddell family: I will always best remember Claudia for her enthusiastic organizing of our Millennium Foundation children's Christmas parties with me over so many years. She was such a warm and spirited person, gracious and full of fun and wanting to ensure that all the children and adults enjoyed themselves to the utmost. Such a full life you have had together and so many adventures! Our deepest sympathies to you Norman, and to all the family, on your loss. Wishing very much that this horrible year was not keeping us all from sharing these words in person and hoping that we can make that up before too long. We will keep all of you in our thoughts. Diana (and Pierre)

Claudia's passing has left a void in our family. It will remain so. It is with heartfelt condolences that I express how sad I am for Norman, Morgan, Lina and Eleanor. And for Claudia's grandchildren. She loved them and shared in their lives with a touching and open childlike quality.
