In Celebration of

Helena Shuck (Sapyla)

June 28, 1932 -  November 5, 2018

Helena Shuck passed away November 5th. Dearly beloved wife of Maurice and deeply cherished mother and mother-in-law of “Lalla” Frances Ann and Paul Huberdeau and their dog Chelsea, (aka the grand dog). Helena was the daughter of the late Franciska and Teodor Sapyla. Also surviving her are cousins, nieces, nephew and friends both here and in the US.

She leaves to mourn, her husband of 67 years as well as their beloved daughter who thought of her as not only a mother, but also a best friend. Helena was a most vibrant, vivacious personality whose smile was outstanding. She made a presence upon her arrival, elegant, and yet unassuming. Her laughter was contagious! Two years ago, life as we knew it came to a crashing halt. Within a year of her ALS diagnosis, she lost the ability to eat and speak. And yet, her spirit remained indomitable, her courage strong and the glint in her eyes still shone brightly. However, ALS is a terrible scourge, and finally, the light dimmed and was no more.

As per Helena’s request, a private funeral and burial has already taken place. On her behalf, I invite all who wish to remember her, to take a sip and a bite of your favourite beverage and food. Savour every morsel, and swallow. Give thanks and know that she too is now doing the same up where the angels live.

Special thanks to Dr. Massie and Tony Vitale at the Neuro. And heartfelt thanks to the Balfour Mount Palliative Care Unit at the Royal Vic for the compassionate care she and we received during her final week.

Morris, Fran and Paul... Your Mom was such a dear sweet person. We always enjoyed visiting with her and would look forward to our time together, even if it was brief. She was so vibrant and definitely taken way too soon. Our prayers are with you all and hope you find peace knowing she is now at peace.
Love Steve and Lydia

Helene was indeed a driving force in FA's life. They spent lots of time together, doing everyday things like listening to music and sharing books; as well as not-so-ordinary things like vacationing together as a family and winning at the casinos. While Helene hasn't been able to do those things for the last bit, I know she's doing all of them now--just from a different place. Here's to her winning hand up there...
