In Celebration of

Constantinos (Gus) Metrakos

March 16, 1936 -  November 12, 2016

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Constantinos at the age of 80. He was predeceased in 2015 by his wife of 52 years, Helen, the love of his life. He leaves to mourn “his boys” Anthony (Isabel) and George (Ina) and his beloved grandchildren Emilie, Nicholas, Gabriel, Tilman and Finn to whom he was Papou.

Also missing him are his brother Spero (late Helen), brother-in-law Paul (late Tassie), sister-in-law Marianne (late John), sister-in-law Carolyn (late Jimmy), sister-in-law Dolores (late Harry), sister-in-law Georgia (Theodore), sisters-in-law Elizabeth and Betsy and friend Sophia (late Dean). Cherished “Uncle Gus” and “Costaki” to many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, particularly his kindergarten friend, the late Billy Walton and more recently his monthly breakfast group and evening dinner friends at the Cambridge.

Gus was a prolific and decorated athlete during his years at Montreal High in the 1950’s with successes in football, basketball, water polo and swimming.

If you’ve eaten in a restaurant in Montreal from the 1960’s to early 2000’s, chances are very high that the staff was in some way connected to Gus through his master stewardship of some of the most popular hotels and restaurants in the city during those years. In particular, the Bar-B-Barn chain where he worked for over 20 years and the then iconic Château de l’Aéroport in Mirabel where he oversaw flight kitchen operations for transatlantic flights leaving Montreal. Later in his career, he supported his wife Helen’s bustling sewing academy with everything from logistics and purchasing to cleaning and accounting.

Gus was fervently committed to his family and this was never better exemplified than through his love for Helen and his pride in his sons Anthony and George. He dedicated his life to them and supported them with all his energy.

Special thanks to the staff at the Jewish General, Lakeshore and Richardson Hospitals for the care provided to Gus in the last months of his life.

The family will receive condolences on Monday, November 21st, 2016 at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, H2V 2P9, (514)279-6540, www.mountroyalcem.com from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Additional visitation will occur on Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 from 11:00am to 12:00pm, followed by the Funeral Service in the Chapel at the Complex. A reception for all family and friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Society to continue Gus’ efforts in advancing research into dementia.
