In Celebration of

Carolyn (Cookie) Ludwika Lukian Slater

March 25, 1930 -  August 25, 2020

Born March 25, 1930 in Montreal, died peacefully at the Lachine Hospital August 25, 2020. Beloved daughter of the late George Lukian and the late Ludwicka Buksak, Cookie was the youngest of eleven children. Her life spanned many eras; born into a large family at the start of the Great Depression; watching all her brothers leave home for WWII, and; as a young widow at 39 returning to work and raising and educating her two children.

Just five days before leaving us, Cookie was completing a daily crossword puzzle (in pen), and setting a new Mahjong record on her iPad. Even at 90, she was undaunted by and loved to learn new technology.

Ever the adventurer with an artistic eye, Cookie traveled the world looking for treasures to add to her collections. Jewelry from India, handmade postcards from Singapore, silk from China, and paintings from Bali decorated her home. She was especially delighted when she was accompanied by her brothers and sisters.

At home, she dressed like Auntie Mame, entertained like Martha, and always kept the bread in the freezer. Famous not only for her style and hospitality she excelled at sewing, knitting, and needlepoint. Her handmade gifts are treasured by those who were lucky enough to receive them.

After her passing, David and Julie discovered her last, signed, lottery ticket and true to style, it is a winner! The lucky ticket will be exchanged for one last roll and any proceeds will be donated to the Lachine Hospital Foundation.

Survived by her daughter, Julie (Michael), son David, grandchildren Michael and Sarah (John), their mother Anne, sister Mona, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Predeceased by her husband, Donald Slater (1927-1969), sisters Anne (Annie), Victoria (Vicky), Rose, Gloria, and brothers Richard (Dickie), Dimitri (Danny), William (Bill), Frank (Utsie), Stefanos (Steve), and son in law Nicola (Nicky) Santini.

The funeral will be on Thursday September 10th 2020, visitation starting at 12pm and service at 1pm at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, QC, H2V 2P9 (514) 279-6540, www.mountroyalcem.com. Under the circumstances of Covid-19, the service will be private for family and friends.

The family thanks the compassionate staff at the Lachine Hospital for her wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lachine Hospital Foundation in Cookie’s memory would be appreciated.
