In Celebration of
Anne Drummond (née Lafleur) M.A. Ph.D.
February 15, 1941 -
March 17, 2023
Died peacefully on St. Patrick’s Day with her family by her side. Survived by her husband, Derek; her sons Colin (Jyoti), Gavin (Kate), Rob (Linton), and Louis (Vikki); daughter of John T. and Margaret Lafleur; sister of Margot; pre-deceased by her brother Alan. Loving grandmother to Kayde, Grier, Charlotte, Francesca, Alice, Trinity, Veronica, Thomas, and Roxane.
Anne was raised in Hampstead and attended McGill University, where she earned her B.A. and met Derek, who was to be her husband for over 60 years. Throughout that time, they lived in the same house in Westmount, raising their four boys, making and keeping friends, and becoming role models and examples of friendliness and continuity to all who met them. Anne was a thoughtful, sensitive, intense, compassionate woman: serious about women’s rights; an avid spectator of national and provincial politics; and a cultivator of idiosyncratic passions that ranged from baseball to knitting. When her boys were in their late teens, she returned to McGill to obtain her M.A. (History) at McGill, then her Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa. An amateur tennis champion of steely determination, she won her last club title at age 50.
Anne loved many things and people, but among them are her 9 grandchildren, her dogs, her garden, writing poetry, the yellow house in Kennebunk, the beach on Sanibel, sitting with her husband on their front porch, and virtually any book she could lay her hands on.
