In Celebration of
Anne Badke
November 25, 1937 -
June 15, 2020
It's hard to put into words the sadness we feel at the loss of our beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend who passed away peacefully at home at the age of 82. Anne was our rock, a strong, kind, feisty, and intelligent woman who touched the lives of all who knew her.
The daughter of Irish immigrant (Jerry) and Irish/Quebecoise (Ivy) parents, Anne grew up in Montreal, the eldest of six siblings. Anne was both nurturing and independent, treating people fairly and committed to righting injustices. She earned a teaching degree while raising three kids and although briefly enjoyed that profession, left it to pursue her love of the arts, creating art workshop experiences in the Laurentians, launching a plush bear making business, and promoting knowledge of Inuit and First Nation artists. Her greatest career satisfaction was found directing the non-profit NDG Senior Citizens’ Council, engaging in community development, advocacy, action, and network building to improve the quality of life for Montreal’s elderly community.
Anne shared a loving 57 years of marriage with Don. Together they enjoyed traveling, theater, skiing, tennis, and instilled in their children values of kindness, humility, equality, and justice.
Anne leaves behind her beloved husband Don, who in his quiet, gentle ways has selflessly cared for his best friend not only through 57 years of marriage, but most recently patiently and lovingly through a long and difficult illness. She also leaves her three children, Catherine, Michael (Paula), and Lara (George) who will miss her dearly; six grandchildren, Gavin, Jordan, Dylan, Cameron, Melina, and Nicolas who benefited from a fun, loving Nannie who adored each of them (and was known, on occasion, to feed them ice cream for dinner); five siblings, Brian (Mary Ann), Helen (Joe, de-ceased), Norah (Roger), Derek, and Jetta (Yves), who have remained close and supportive; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and friends whom she cherished.
In the last years of her life, Anne suffered from a debilitating illness. Primary Progressive Aphasia stole many years from her and much of her vitality. As has been true throughout her life, Anne faced even this challenge with strength and grace. Anne’s family wishes to thank the caring and devoted CLSC staff, especially Samantha, and the many caretakers who provided wonderful attention, comfort, and love over the years. Monica, in particular, helped Anne enjoy a better quality of life throughout Anne’s illness and supported us in so many ways.
Our family would appreciate you signing the on-line registry book at mountroyalcem. com to share your favorite memories of our beloved Anne. Feel free to upload any pictures you have with Anne and leave us a way to con-tact you with information about a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NDG Senior Citizen’s Council (ndgscc.ca/donate) or a charity of your choice empowering justice and equity issues in society. Goodbye, Anne. We’ll be thinking of you every single day, you’ll be in our hearts forever. We love you.
